 Where?

This outreach project is based in a church centre, which is well placed right in the centre of Porth, near a busy shopping area and opposite a public library. Signs are posted outside to let people know when the service is available and the church provides a member of staff to act as receptionist for the service. The centre has a stair lift to provide access for the disabled and there is a car park opposite the venue.

What?

The Speakeasy holds an advice clinic every Wednesday from 10.00am – 1.00pm, alternating between focussing on debt and welfare benefits. Demand for appointments is always high.

Why?

The Speakeasy was invited to set up an outreach project in Porth by a local businessman who offered to give us initial funding for the project. He felt that there was great need for a debt and legal advice service in the area, but there was no adequate provision of this type for local residents. Since it began in 2004, the project has been endorsed by the Legal Services Commission and, in 2006, received money from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

The project benefits a large number of clients. We receive referrals from other general advice centres in the Rhondda and attract many who have seen our posters and project flyers that are displayed around the area. Over time, the Speakeasy’s solicitors have been involved in a lot of court and tribunal work in and around Porth.
