Where?
The Speakeasy’s main office is based in Roath, just off the busy shopping area of Albany Road. Surrounded by student accommodation, rented properties and in an area that is home to many black ethnic and minority residents, the main office is ideally situated to be in easy reach of potential clients. Well serviced with major bus routes, it is also readily accessible by people living in Pentwyn, Llanedeyrn and other outlying areas of the city.
What?
The Centre is open every Monday – Friday from 10.00am – 1.00pm for clients to drop in or arrange an appointment. We have three interview rooms available for client consultations and it is not unusual for all three to be in use simultaneously. We face the ongoing problem of demand for our service outstripping what we can supply. Taking on two new trainee solicitors in Autumn 2007 has allowed us to increase the numbers of clients seen. However, in view of the present economic climate, together with the effects of the credit crunch, more and more people are turning to us for help.
Our Results (Cardiff and outreach work)
April 09 - March 10
Total clients assisted = 1383
Total additional benefits awarded to clients = £985,044
Total clients' debts written-off/ renegotiated = £3,715,965
Why?
This is the original Speakeasy project. In 1992, a number of local Christians, some of whom were solicitors, began to recognise the scale of indebtedness in the local community, and the resulting distress and hardship. They also identified that private firms of solicitors were not generally geared up to offer an appropriate service to address this problem. They therefore set up the Speakeasy as a centre that would be able to offer a Legal Help service and also assist people who fall outside the Legal Help scheme.
